8 neighborhoods linked by the long history of logistics in the I.E.

Live from the Frontline is a participatory memory project that brings artists into the archives and the landscapes of logistics to explore the roots of environmental racism in Riverside and San Bernardino. Each site makes palpable long histories of colonialism and extraction from the land and labor. Together they reveal what the curators call “the slow violence of the supply chain.” Artists have created site-specific works that connect past and present and support advocacy for social justice.

This project engages communities along the corridors of the supply chain, in the shadows of freeways, historic rail yards and military bases. The history of these frontline communities dramatize how the ground was laid for today’s billion square feet of distribution warehouses, served daily by tens of thousands of trucks and trains. Live from the Frontline reveals the human impacts of economic systems that have large-scale environmental consequences shaping inequalities in public health, housing, and employment. The artworks portray the rise of a new empire of logistics out of the region’s agricultural landscape and military & industrial ruins.

Live from the Frontline recasts environmental justice sites as sites of conscience – linking 8 memorial spaces digitally, in archives, and through public art. In these spaces we can remember and learn from the past while creatively envisioning and advocating for a different future.

Live from the Frontline is a project of A People’s History of the I.E., a digital archive and mapping platform. A People’s History of the IE documents, preserves, and geolocates stories of community building, patterns of segregation, entrepreneurship, and organizing for civil rights among historic communities of color, working people, and LGBTQ+ individuals in Riverside and San Bernardino. It is directed by Drs. Catherine Gudis, Audrey Maier, and Jennifer Tilton alongside countless community members and students. Learn more about us.

Live from the Frontline is made possible by Creative Corps Inland SoCal and the California Arts Council, a state agency. It is also supported by the UCR Teresa and Byron Pollitt Endowed Term Chair for Interdisciplinary Learning and Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

This activity is funded in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency.
